I recently spent a weekend in Bristol with my other half and stayed at the beautiful Mercure Grand Hotel a stunning Grade II listed building which has a wonderful Victorian façade that you can see in the photos above. The interior has recently been renovated and they have given it a contemporary look which features commissioned pieces by local artists from the street art scene such as Gemma Compton (check the video at the bottom of this post) and Cai Burton.
We arrived on a Saturday in the afternoon and left our car in the car park which is right next to the hotel. After our check-in we went to our room to drop our things and the first thing I noticed was how the corridors feature photos of Bristol's street art along with other cool photos and paintings, a very nice detail.
We stayed at one of their Privilege rooms which was very spacious and bright, with modern decoration and striking colours. We loved it and it was a pleasant surprise to have found chocolates with a note that the hotel manager had sent to our room. It was a lovely gesture and they were delicious!
The hotel has a fantastic location on Broad Street in the heart of the Old City so we decided to go for a wander towards the harbour which is within walking distance of the hotel. Right around the corner from the hotel, on Corn Street, there was a lovely flea market. Just off that street you can also get to St. Nicholas Market which is definitely worth visiting. There are numerous pubs and bars nearby too. We then walked towards Bristol Hippodrome and discovered the street food stalls of the Harbourside Market. We had a quick but very tasty lunch there and decided to go back to the hotel to rest for a bit as we had booked massages at the Spa in the afternoon.
At the spa I had the a muscle energiser treatment and my husband had the back massage. Both were wonderful but I have to say that I particularly liked mine because I have been suffering from pain in a shoulder for a long time and during the massage I brought it up and the masseur, who by the way is the spa manager, concentrated on that particular problem and I am happy to report that although I was a bit sore for a couple of days (which is normal), I haven't had much pain in the shoulder since! Needless to say I highly recommend the massage!
After our treaments we had a long nice relaxing time at the swimming pool, the jacuzzi and the sauna and eventually returned to our hotel to get ready for dinner. We had booked a table at Keepers Kitchen & Bar which is within the hotel. Everything we ordered was delicious and the service was great. Have a look at my food below. It was as good as it looks!
Later that evening we went out to the harbour again. This is the first time I experience the vibrant night life in Bristol and it was great. As a photographer, I couldn't resist taking some time to take plenty of photos at the harbour too and we even ventured to the Clifton Suspension Bridge to take some landscape shots. Unfortunately by then the weather was not on my side as it got very windy and it was drizzling all the time, so didn't manage to get the photos I hoped but I still tried!
The next day we had a delicious breakfast buffet at Keepers and we decide to check-out. Since the parking was available till 6pm we decided to stay in the city till the afternoon. So we went for a walk along the river all the way to the SS Great Britain. We had visited it in a previous occasion so we only took a few photos and we headed back to have lunch. On our way out of the city we decided to visit the Clifton bridge one more time.
Here are some images I took in Bristol and Clifton during the daytime and one from the nighttime (more of those to come on the next post):
And here are some clips which I captured throughout our trip to share on Instagram stories:
So that was our lovely getaway at Mercure Grand Hotel in Bristol. We really enjoyed our stay there and one of the best parts was all the great service by the staff in the hotel, the restaurant and the spa. They were all very helpful and made it an even more relaxing trip. We will definitely return next time we visit Bristol! #ExpericenMercure.
My next post includes my favourite night shots from the trip: long exposures around the harbour on Saturday night. Check it out here.
